Independence day, 08

Patriotism was all in the air in Vidyaniketan today, the 15th of August . The day began in the name of God as we partook in the Holy Eucharist in the Parish to celebrate the Feast of the Assumption and the 62nd Independence Day. We prayed for the country's harmony and integration through the intercession of our Blessed Mother Mary. The Eucharist was followed by the Flag Hoisting ceremony. Fr Walter Andrade, being the guest of honour, delivered a meaningful message. He stressed on the agenda of taking up North Karnataka as our mission and the Dalits and Women as our priority group.

Celebration of Freedom in Prison

August is the month when patriotism is all in the air and it brings before us the memories of the struggles our freedom fighters went through to make India a free country. On the 14th of August we shared the joy of freedom with the inmates of Dharwad Prison. It was organized by the Shanti Pragati Kendra, a centre for social work run by the Sisters of Charity. We put up a skit on the life of St Maximilian Kolbe stressing on the life of sacrifice that the great saint lived. The skit moved those who were witnessing it and was appreciated by the Bishop for its message and presentation. We returned with the thought "to condemn the sin and not the sinner." Yes, we are free here to build this nation and let us contribute by living our lives meaningfully.

The Blog was officially inaugurated by Fr Walter Andrade, SJ on the 31st of July, the Feast of St Ignatius of Loyola.

Fire that kindles other fires

Through the meaningful and spiritually enriching novena and a talk on the life of the soldier saint by Fr Denis Coelho, SJ on the eve of the feast, we prepared ourselves for the feast.
On the 31st July, 2008 we as a community celebrated the feast of our founder St Ignatius of Loyola. Early in the morning, long before dawn, we gathered together in the community chapel to get into the spirit of the feast and the saint. We asked the blessings of the Lord in the Eucharistic banquet through the intercessions of St Ignatius at 11.oo am. Fr Joe Rodrigues, the Dean of the Hubli-Dharwad deanery was the main celebrant. We were joined by the parish priest Fr Fidelino, sisters of the neighbouring convents, the priests from Sevalaya and Don Bosco and our wellwishers. Fr Joe in his sermon stressed on upholding the Ignatian values and making them relevant to our generation. The angelic choir of the scholastics of Vidyaniketan enhanced the spirits in the people gathered. The mass was followed by a fellowship meal. The cooking was well appreciated by all who were gathered. In the evening the community gathered for a community prayer and the feast meal.
May St Ignatius bless all of us

Orientation Programme-08

It was yet another cloudy day in Dharwad when we began our orientation programme-08 in Vidyaniketan. Though cloudy, there was no sign of rain. But we did experience the showers in the form of smiles and peels of laughter with the help pf Fr Frankie Serrao, who helped us to guide ourselves in our spiritual, academic, inter-personal and affective life. We also had inputs on personality development and community building. Many group discussions enabled us to know one another very intimately.
In the evening we had a meaningful Eucharist in which the first years were solemnly and officially inducted into our community. Fr Frankie, being the main celebrant, inspired us with his homily and called us to lead a joyful and an authentic Jesuit life.
The ‘badakhana’ was followed by the community recreation, in which all of us participated enthusiastically. Achilles (Sch. Pradeep Crasta) was the centre of attraction in the skit as well as in dancing.
Second day of the orientation was devoted to the topics of personal integration, the Society’s expectations and an action plan for the year, the resource person being our own Fr Walter Andrade. After the tea break Fr Ivan Mendonca, the Superior of Vidyaniketan, explained our way of proceeding in Vidyaniketan, especially to the new comers. We ended our programme sweetly by eating sweets.

A bend of the road is not the end of the road. Six of our brothers after spending their three years in Vidyaniketan moved forward for their future formation studies. Schs.Lancy, Vinod R, Alwyn, Ivan, Francis Pinto, Arun and George bid adieu to this joy-abode. Though the parting was painful yet fulfilling. Dear brothers we really enjoyed your company for these two years. thanks for all the service to this house. As you move forward in life, a life filled with joys and sorrows, trials and temptations, consolations and desolations, smiles and tears, be the sons of Ignatius and do not break limits, shatter them.
